Isabel BrownNursery Newsletter Spring Term 2010

Dear Parents,

This newsletter is designed to let you know about our plans for the spring term and ways in which you can support your child during this time.

Reminders and Dates for your diary

On Monday mornings we have assemblies at 9.10 and so would be grateful if all children could arrive promptly and parents and carers leave as soon as possible on this day.

We will change library books each Monday. Please try to return your child’s book each week and don’t forget your book bag.

Lisa Bailey We are all practicing putting on and fastening coats and are doing quite well but would benefit from extra practice at home.

Don’t forget £1 and 50p per week for Nursery Fund if you can!

After February half term we are beginning a sound of the week session each Monday, where we ask each child to bring in an object or picture (with their name stuck onto it please) beginning with the appropriate letter of the alphabet so that we can look at them during carpet time.
Please do not send in anything very precious or fragile! Within school we use Jolly Phonics’ and many other resources. Don’t forget to teach your child letter names e.g. ABCD song! And the sounds too! It is also beneficial to show capital letters as well as lower case e.g. Aa, Bb, Cc, Do not worry if your child does not seem interested, when they move to Reception the phonic input increases. In nursery it just fun and another experience!

The dates and letter sounds are as follows:-

Monday 22nd February-‘s’ e.g. the object could be a sandwich or sock etc.
Monday 1st March- ‘a’
Monday 8th March –‘t’
Monday 15th march –‘p’
Monday 22nd March- ‘i’

Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Each Monday every child is given the opportunity to tell the others what they have been doing over the weekend, so if your child has something to bring in to show, whether it is something that they have made or information about somewhere they have visited please do not hesitate to send it in. Also please fill in the clouds on the nursery news and interest board found in the cloak room! I use these as well as my observations of the children to decide what mini topics to teach them. This makes their learning more appropriate and interesting for them. Please feel free to look at your child’s Learning journey to see what we have been up to. Each week I also display our weekly objectives on the nursery door so you know what we have been learning and thinking about!

Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

We will be thinking about how to take care of ourselves and each other. We will be practicing taking responsibility for dressing and undressing ourselves to become more independent. We will practice being confident when sharing and taking turns during play with our friends, learning to follow class rules and expectations to make school a fun and happy place to be. Miss Brown will do circle time games and stories with us each week.

Communication Language and Literacy.

The following are examples of a few activities that you could do at home.

Practice writing first names by writing on top of yellow/pale green felt tip pen. Practice writing individual letters from your child’s name. Remember the capital letter at the beginning of their name. If your child has a long name, work on a few letters at a time. If you are unsure of letter formation and the best way to teach your child, please see Mrs Bailey.

Look for writing when you are out e.g. street and shop names. Read with your child, pointing to words as you read. Talk about the pictures. Discuss what it was about. What might happen next? This helps to reinforce the sequence of stories, show the direction of text, and to identify events illustrated in the pictures.

Provide opportunities for your child to draw and write. Although it looks like scribbling it will be something important to them. Ask them what it is they have drawn or written, as this is an important stage of writing development.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy.

The following are examples of a few our activities that you could do at home.

Count objects 1-10. Start with smaller amounts of objects e.g. 3 apples when shopping. Encourage the children to touch each one when they count and to do this slowly and carefully.

Look for numbers as you walk around. E.g. car registrations and house numbers.

Look for books with opportunities to count.

Look for shapes, and create patterns.

Play games involving dice and counting.

Sing number songs.

Creative Development.

We will practice cutting with scissors in school. The children would benefit from practice at home with supervision. We spend lots of time creating in school and practicing painting and gluing. We will be completing new displays and pictures based on our mini topics and Maths work. Please reinforce colours if your child is still unsure. Miss Brown teaches music each week.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World.

We will be looking at seasonal changes and complete seasonal activities e.g. feeding the birds, experiments with ice. We will investigate objects and materials using all our senses. We will build and construct using a variety of resources. We will also take part in a variety of colour and sound investigations. Each day we complete a calendar and this helps us to learn the days of the week and watch the weather.

Physical Development

We will practice different ways of moving on our different body parts. Holding pencils and scissors correctly and safely. The children will be taking part in a variety of physical skills outside including bike riding, climbing, ball skills, skipping, running and games.

Often, a child’s answer to “did you have a good day at school today?” or “what did you do?” Is to tell you that they just played! Rest assured, playing is the best way to learn when you are 3 and 4. I hope that you and your children enjoy the next term as much as we will!

Should you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks for your continuing support.

Mrs. Bailey, Miss Brown and Nursery Team!
