Welcome to the Reception Homepage

Miss KirkThis year we have two Reception Classes, Dunham taught by Miss Kirk and Tatton taught by Mrs Odell.

We work very closely with the Nursery and often work together with the children sharing the outdoor area. The children are taught to care for others and to take responsibility for looking after their environment. The children learn to follow classroom routines and understand the importance of working and playing co-operatively. We provide a welcoming environment where children feel secure and are happy to separate from their carers. We encourage the children to be interested, excited and motivated to learn and value all the children’s individual talents. The curriculum for the Foundation Stage (Nursery & Reception) Mrs Odellis divided into six areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional development.
  • Communication, Language and Literacy.
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy.
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
  • Creative Development.
  • Physical Development.

Within each classroom these areas of learning are covered through well planned continuous play provision and planned adult led activities. Both Dunham and Tatton classrooms have the following continuous provision areas available:

  • Construction.
  • Small World.
  • Computer.
  • Water.
  • Sand.
  • Painting.
  • Creative.
  • Writing.
  • Role Play.
  • Reading.
  • Dough.

Throughout the day the children take part in a variety of whole class, small group and individual work. Below is an example of what a typical day in Reception Class might look like:

  • Locate name card and post in box (varying between first name and surname.
  • Sit on carpet area for registration, calendar and special news.
  • Assembly.
  • Whole Class introduction of activities.
  • Continuous provision and group/individual work.
  • Snack time (Fruit and Milk/Water.)
  • Continuous provision and group/individual work continued with outdoor provision available.
  • Whole Class plenary.
  • Lunch and outdoor play.
  • Sit on carpet area for registration and whole class teaching.
  • Continuous provision and group/individual work.
  • Snack time (Fruit and Water.)
  • Continuous provision and group/individual work continued with outdoor provision available.
  • Whole Class plenary/Story.
  • Home time.

As the children progress through the Reception year the day becomes more structured and the amount of time spent on focus work increases. However everyday in Reception is different and we do encourage the children to share with the class special things they have done at home.
Speaking and Listening is a key aspect of the curriculum and the children are taught these skills throughout the Foundation Stage.
