Topic Work

Our topic this term is ‘Fire’. We shall be learning about The Great Fire of London, Samuel Pepys and his Diary, Fireworks and Fire Safety and a range of other interesting themes all connected to fire. Our topic work will allow children access to lots of curriculum areas: History, Art, Drama, Geography, ICT, Music, Design and Technology and also improve their reading, writing and recording skills.

The fire brigade will come to visit the children and talk to them about Fire Safety and hopefully extinguish a minute version of the Great Fire of London.

If anybody has any books or resources that may enhance our Fire Topic please send them into school; we promise they will be well looked after!

Science

Our Topics this term are Using Electricity & Forces and Movement. Children will learn about the different sources of electricity and become more aware of electrical appliances and safety around the home. They will build their own electrical circuit using a switch and a bulb. In the forces and Movement topic children will carry out a range of scientific investigations and learn about pushes, pulls, twists and turns and explore the concept of speeding up and slowing sown. They will record their observations using a range of graphs and charts.

Homework

Literacy and Numeracy homework will be set and taken home every Friday. Homework folders should be returned by Wednesday. Spelling tests will continue to be carried out on a Monday; please help your child learn their spellings at home. We may also, from time to time, ask your child to do some research for a particular topic. Please get involved with your child’s homework; your help and assistance is invaluable.

We will collect all ‘home reading records’ on a regular basis so that we can check all children are reading regularly at home and respond to any of your comments and observations. Your son/daughter will be able to change their reading books whenever they have finished them; changing of books is not restricted to any particular day.

We hope your child enjoys the first term in Year 2. If you have any queries concerns, or need to speak to us at any time, please find us at the end of the day or send a note into school with your son/daughter and we will respond appropriately.

Regards

Hayley Marshall – 2 Dunham
Sarah Royle – 2 Tatton
