Mrs Edwards

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Welcome back! As we begin a new term, here is some important information about Year Two that we would like to bring to your attention.

Firstly, topics this term are:

Puppets and Islands, Near and Far

This is a combination of History, Art, Geography, English, and D&T.
We will be looking at the history of puppets and making our own. Lots of sewing, role play, speaking, listening and design opportunities.

Islands (Geography and Science)Mrs Watson

This topic focuses on islands from the Galapagos Islands to the Scottish Isle of Coll.
Throughout the topic the children learn about Charles Darwin and his discoveries alongside the mythical Katie Morag and life in the Hebrides.

We also discuss various types of holiday and through role play in our ‘Airport’ we will put together a brochure of imaginary holidays. Throughout this topic we make reference to maps of the world, globes and atlases. The children will use “paint” software to create maps. A class trip to Manchester Airport at the beginning of July compliments this topic.

Science will focus on plants and animals in their natural habitats as we endeavour to become ‘Darwin Explorers’ .

Literacy

The Literacy hour continues and the children are hopefully well accustomed to the routine this involves! This term’s objectives will cover the study of a range of texts which include stories, playscripts and a variety of silly poems, and reading and writing non fiction texts. This is in addition to the phonics and grammar work which is ongoing. Big writing continues every Friday

Numeracy

Numeracy skills are reinforced, such as addition and subtraction. Division will be recognised as sharing and halving. Simple multiplication will be taught as, lots of, and groups of. Place value and number sequences are also reinforced. The children will also cover measures, shape and space, simple fractions, time and handling data.

Homework

Homework will continue to be set every Wednesday and should be handed in by the following Monday. It will include six spellings to learn and a short piece of Literacy and Numeracy work, based on the work which has been taught in class that week. Children should read regularly to an adult. Your assistance with homework will be greatly appreciated.
