Welcome to the Class 3 Homepage

Dear ParentsMr A Gifford

It is hard to believe that we are now in the last term of the year! Just like the previous two, Term 3 will be very busy from the outset and remain that way until the last day.

One of the major highlights of the term is obviously the Stanley Head residential trip. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children of Year Three to learn a huge amount about themselves and their peers, and to face the challenge of being away from home for the night.

I was hugely impressed with the effort that went into the Roman ‘Aspire’ projects and I thank you for the support you gave to your children. I would like to give the parents a chance to come in and see the projects that have been produced so keep your eyes open for a notice with the date and time to enter the Year 3 ‘Roman Experience’.

The following is a broad picture of what will be delivered throughout Term 3. As part of our local study I will be asking parents to assist the class during out of school expeditions.

Finally, at the end of this year I would like to put together a CD containing all of the pictures that have been accumulated. This is a great souvenir and something to look back on many years from now. However, if you object to your child’s picture being given to others in the class, please inform me as this will impact on the number of pictures that can be included.

Enjoy the sun and the long evenings!

Kind regards,

Mr Adam Gifford

Term 3 - Summer Term

Literacy:

For the first half of the Term we will be diving into ‘Adventures’. We will look at the structure of adventure stories that has been successful for authors such as Roald Dahl and J. K. Rowling. Year 3 will become an adventure factory, producing work that will keep readers hooked and coming back for more!
The children’s informative writing will also be developed over the course of the term and our ‘Topic’ will be the perfect vehicle to explore this genre of writing.
We will ensure that the basics are firmly in place and developed, and we will be extending vocabulary, punctuation skills, connectives and sentence openings.
The success of the children’s writing is, in part, due to what, and how often, they are reading. It is important that the home reading records are kept up to date and the children are reading books, appropriate to their ability, as often as possible.

Numeracy

In addition to the extension and reinforcement of the four key operations (Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), place value will be a focus throughout the term. This will allow children to develop a greater understanding of decimal numbers, naming large numbers, dividing and multiplying numbers by 10, 100 and 1000, and the ability to round numbers.
We will continually monitor the children’s ability to solve problems mentally and develop strategies to attack increasingly complex problems.
We will be re-checking the multiplication tables on a weekly basis and the specific multiplication table will be given with the weekly homework.

Foundation Subjects

The majority of the foundation subjects studied during the third term will be delivered through our topic ‘What’s Gone Into My Sandwich?’ This topic has a large geography and science focus and has strong links to the local community. We will be looking at food sourcing, where food is produced in our local area and the decisions that are made by a local catering business. Class trips are being organised to take place throughout the term. I will be asking for parent helpers for out of school excursions as soon as the dates have been confirmed.

Homework

Initially the homework will be in the format that the children have been using for the majority of the previous two terms. I ask that homework books are brought into school on Friday. If the books are not available to me on Friday it is very difficult to find time to mark them before returning them on Monday.
Another ‘Aspire’ project has been planned for Term 3. The children have been through a self-evaluation process and we have discussed many aspects involved with the last project. The children’s ability to plan, time-table and produce a project should continue to improve and I am looking forward to another round of fantastic projects.

Swimming

Swimming will continue on Fridays. However, we will not be swimming on the following dates:
Friday 7th May
Friday 14th May
Friday 4th June
Friday 11th June
Friday 23rd July
