Welcome to Year Four

We hope that you have all had a lovely summer holiday.
The children have settled into their beautiful new classrooms quickly! During our first term we will be learning about... .Emma Francis

Literacy

In literacy we will be looking at stories from historical settings, poetry and newspapers, magazines and information texts. Our daily literacy lessons will concentrate mainly on good writing practice which includes accurate use of basic punctuation and high frequency spelling words.

We will be continuing to do Big Writing every Thursday, in which the children will be encouraged to write in a range of contexts. They will be encouraged to use ‘wow’ words to extend their vocabulary at all times and to use a variety of sentence openers and connectives.

It is still very important that the children spend time reading daily. Reading books and the pink reading logs need to be brought into school everyday. The children are encouraged to write anything that they read into their reading log on a daily basis. You can help your child’s reading development by questioning them on the text or helping them make predictions about what the book might be about or what might happen next. Some children still find it difficult choosing an appropriate book. The children should be encouraged to read the ‘blurb’, read the first page or two and then decide if they will enjoy it. I always try to question the children about the book that they have chosen and why they have chosen it. If they find a particular author they enjoy, encourage them to make a note of it and find another book by the same author, although it is also important that they read a range of books by a range of authors over the year.

The beginning of the term will be focused on place value. We will continue to work on multiplication tables, division and mental strategies for addition and subtraction on a daily basis. Mental maths test take place frequently in class and we also play a variety of maths based games. We try to beat our loop cards scores as often as we can. This improves our mental maths as well as our listening skills.

Foundation subjects

The majority of our foundation subjects will be covered through our topic work ‘The Tudors.’

Additional information

Spelling and homework will continue to go home on a weekly basis. Homework will be handed out on a Monday and should be brought back into school on a Friday (unless advised otherwise).
PE lessons are on a Wednesday afternoon.
Please keep PE kits in school until Fridays as we may choose to use the field on a Friday morning.
Children should be prepared with both indoor and outdoor kit.
School uniform can not be worn during PE sessions.
Indoor school shoes need to be kept in school.
Swimming lessons will begin Friday 16th September. Please remind your child to bring in their costume, towel, goggles and cap.
The children are aware of our procedures for changing footwear and keeping our classroom tidy and safe.
If there are any matters that need to be brought to our attention please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

Mr Gifford and Mrs Francis
