Topic Work

Our topic for the Autumn term is ‘Meet the Greeks’. Children will learn about the life and times of the Ancient Greeks and this topic work will allow children access to lots of curriculum areas: History, Art, Drama, Geography, ICT, Music and Design & Technology. The topic work will also provide opportunities for children to improve their reading, writing and recording skills.

If anybody has any books or resources that may enhance our topic work please send them into school; I promise they will be well looked after!

Science – ‘Keeping Healthy’ – children will learn about the benefits of eating a balanced diet. They will also study the function of the heart and the effect that exercise has on our heart and different body parts. We shall also consider the dangers and affects that smoking, alcohol and drugs may have on our bodies.

Religious Education – ‘Religious Buildings’

PSHCE – New Beginnings, Say No to Bullying & Getting on and Falling out – taught by Mrs Grimshaw

Music – Taught by Mrs Robinson plus ‘Whole Class Instrumental and Vocal Project’ taught by Trafford Schools Improvement Services. The French Horn tuition will last for 10 weeks and once all sessions have been completed the children will invite parents/carers into school for a performance of their singing and instrumental skills.

French – Taught by Mrs Grimshaw

PE: Kits (with appropriate footwear) are required in school at all times. Time-tabled sessions in the hall are Monday am & Wednesday pm but if the weather is kind games and outdoor activities will be carried out whenever possible.

Homework

Literacy and Numeracy homework will be set each week and sent home with a spelling list to learn each Friday. Homework books should be returned by Wednesday and a spelling test & times tables test will be carried out each Thursday. I may also, from time to time, ask your child to do some research for a particular topic. Please get involved with your child’s homework; your help and assistance is invaluable.

I will review all ‘home reading records’ on a regular basis so that I can check all children are reading regularly at home and respond to any of your comments and observations. Please encourage your children to read regularly and take the time to listen to them read as often as you can. Your son/daughter will be able to change their reading books whenever they have finished them.

I hope your child enjoys the first term in Year 5. If you have any queries concerns, or need to speak to me at any time, please find me at the end of the day or send a note into school with your son/daughter and I will respond appropriately.

Regards

Hayley Marshall
