Welcome to the Class 5 Homepage

Jacqui BevanWelcome back to school after the lovely summer break and to our first term in Year 5!

Below is a brief outline of the areas of learning we will cover this term.

Literacy

In literacy, we will be looking at novels and stories by significant children’s authors, exploring different styles and forms of instructions, listening, reading and responding to a range of poems, traditional stories, fables, myths and legends and recounts. Our literacy will also link into our work on the Ancient Greeks which will give us the opportunity to explore our speaking and listening skills through plenty of drama.

Reading

Regular reading is still extremely important and we encourage children to follow their own interests and read for fun and enjoyment. Reading with your child at bedtime is great but, even if your child doesn’t want to do this, do read what they are reading from time to time. It is still fun to talk to someone else about favourite stories or articles. Newspapers, comics and magazines also encourage reading for enjoyment.

Writing

We will continue with Big Writing every Friday and the children will be encouraged to write in a range of contexts. Drama and role play will be used to motivate our reluctant writers to make writing interesting and enjoyable.

Numeracy

Our numeracy sessions this term will cover; ordering numbers, place value, perimeter, 2D shape, angles, tessellation, symmetry, multiplication and division, fractions, ratio/proportion, reasoning and explaining, handling data together with regular mental arithmetic, thinking and problem-solving skills to challenge the children in their application of mathematics.

Science

In Science, we will be exploring the structure of the heart and lungs and learning more about blood! Children will find out why exercise is good for us and what can harm the heart and circulation. We will also be investigating gases and exploring air pressure and resistance and discover how we use gases in everyday life.

Topic Work

We will be researching the Ancient Greeks – in particular, the Ancient Olympic Games through to the modern Olympics, finding out how the Olympics started and the ideals involved. We look ahead to London 2012 whilst studying famous Olympians on the way.

ICT

We will use ICT skills throughout the curriculum, designing posters, carrying out research and for data handling in numeracy.

Art/DT

The children will incorporate their Art and DT skills through our work on the Ancient Greeks and the Olympics. There will be opportunities to use a range of materials to make objects as well as using observational drawings to create detailed artwork.

RE

We start the term studying Islam, looking at family life, worship, symbols and a visit to the mosque.

Music

An exciting term with the arrival of the saxophones!! Children will be taking part in a project with Trafford Schools Music and after their 10 x 1 hour sessions will be ready to perform in concert together with their classteacher!! Watch this space ....

PE

Mrs Cosgrove will take the children for PE on Tuesday afternoons. Timperley Lacrosse will start the term with two sessions and then Mrs Cosgrove will continue with outdoor games. Please make sure PE kit is always in school.

Homework

Children are given homework on a Monday and this should be returned on Friday. This allows for ‘homework free’ family time at the weekend. Homework will be a variety of activities aimed to reinforce classroom work and for enjoyment.

The above is a brief summary of our plans for the Autumn term, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

Mrs L. Manifould
