Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back. I hope all of you had a lovely summer and are ready for the busy year ahead!
Literacy
Literacy will concentrate on developing good writing practice that includes accurate use of more sophisticated punctuation and increasing the use of varied vocabulary. The children will re-visit the formats and characteristics of narrative writing, biographies and reports.
Reading is very important and will remain part of the regular homework. Each child has been given a recommended genre reading list for the autumn term which needs to be signed. Please encourage your child to discuss their books with an adult to ensure they get the most out of the stories they read.
Numeracy
The beginning of the term will be focused on: place value, multiplication tables and mental strategies for addition and subtraction. All other areas of numeracy will be covered over the course of the term but it would benefit your child greatly if you could encourage regular, weekly practice of the multiplication tables. The children will have a multiplication test every Tuesday.
Foundation subjects
The majority of the foundation subjects will be covered through our topic work ‘World War Two’. We will be visiting the Imperial War Museum in the second half of the autumn term to consolidate the children’s learning.
The SCAPE project (architectural workshop) will start in October and run for six weeks. The children will be given the opportunity to plan, design and create an outside classroom for the new extension to the school. They will also have the opportunity to visit a local architect’s office to experience the ‘working environment’.
Homework
Homework will be handed out on Fridays and is due in on Wednesdays. Spellings will be issued on Fridays and tests will be on Thursdays.
The children have been issued with a homework/reading diary that can be used for any home/school communication or quick messages. Some of you have already commented on how useful they will be and the children love them. It is very important therefore, that these diaries are in school every day.
If there are any matters that need to be brought to my attention please do not hesitate to visit the classroom after school.
