Walk To School

The School Council 2010

Bikes for Wheelie Week

Aims and Objectives of our School Travel Plan

Objective 1: Increase Travel Awareness
Responsibility: Head Teacher, School Development Committee, School Council

Objective 2: Reduce car trips and car parking
Responsibility: Headteacher, Local Authority

Objective 3: Encourage sustainable travel modes
Responsibility: Headteacher, Classteachers, Local Authority

Targets

A: To increase awareness amongst parents and pupils of the consequences of travel and the impact on others. i.e. 90% of parents to sign up to Travel Plan by July 08, 95% to sign up to Travel plan by July 09.

B: To decrease car travel to school from 50% to 40% by January 2009 (based on SIMS survey results).

C: To have 90% of all parents who drive to school signing the Bollin Drivers’ Pledge by July 08, 95% by December 08

D: To increase regular walking to school from 45% to 55% by January 2009 (based on SIMS survey results).

Investing in Safer Routes

A number of children have indicated that they would like to cycle to school, but there is currently no safe storage for the bikes. A grant would aid this and school could purchase appropriate storage and signage. By also extending Safe Cycling provision and promoting ‘Wheelie Weeks’ for bikes and scooters, it could have an overall impact on reducing car use.

Milestones and Success Criteria

Objective 1: To increase awareness amongst parents and pupils about travel and the impact on others.

  • Publish the STP and make this available to all parents and pupils – encourage parents to sign and return a response form indicating agreement to the aims. (July 08)
  • Develop curriculum areas for class work, involving pupils in appropriate studies. Plan these modules to start in summer term 08 (ongoing)
  • Involve the pupils and School Council in surveys and data collection for the annual reviews. (July 08 / Dec 08)
  • Include the aims of the STP in the Prospectus by July 08.

Objective 2: To reduce car trips and car parking

  • Use bulletins and prospectus to highlight parking problems
  • Encourage informal car sharing scheme
  • Request LA help to enforce parking restrictions, remark yellow lines, put no parking lines around roundabout

Objective 3: To encourage sustainable travel modes

  • Plan Walk to School Weeks into diary for the year
  • Start ‘Walk on Wednesdays’ during summer term 08, monitored by School Council
  • Set up Park and Stride groups using identified parking sites in school vicinity. Publish these in an information booklet for parents by July 08
  • Set up a Wheelie Week in July 08 following Safe Cycle training

Monitoring, Evaluation and Review

The School Travel Plan will be monitored through meetings of the School Council and pupil surveys will be undertaken biannually to assess progress against targets. An annual questionnaire will be sent to parents to collect relevant information.

The School Development Committee of the governing body will monitor the STP as part of their overview of the School Development Plan.

Mrs. Downs (Headteacher) will update the Plan annually and provide the appropriate information to the governors, school community and Trafford Road Safety Unit. Pupils’ travel needs arising from new developments in education and transport provision will be considered as part of this review and the STP will be revised as necessary to take account of these.
