Mental Maths and quick recall are important aspects of Maths and we will carry out weekly Mental Maths tests, as well as quick fire Maths games during the week; including loop cards,Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, BIG maths, 24 club and Times Tables Rock Stars. Mental Maths skills need to be reinforced and practised at home regularly. Please Note: Children are expected to know all of their times tables and corresponding division facts up to and including 12 x 12.

Addditional Information

Homework will be handed out on a Wednesday and should be brought back into school no later than the following Monday (unless advised otherwise). It should be completed independently, however, please feel free to write on the work how your child found it or if you have any questions. Homework will generally consist of a piece of Literacy, Numeracy and Spellings. Occasionally homework will be related to our topic work. Your child's work should be presented as neatly as possible at all times.

We greatly value the home - school partnership so please come and talk to us and let us know if your child has any concerns or if there is anything your child needs support with. As mornings are always very busy, the end of the day, once all children have been collected is the best time if you need a quick word. If you need longer, please arrange a suitable time.

It is essential that your child has their P.E kit in school at all times.
Indoor PE - White Bollin t-shirt and navy shorts.
Outdoor Games - White Bollin t-shirt, tracksuit bottoms/leggings, Bollin sweatshirt and trainers.

This NAMED kit will remain in school, in a Bollin draw string bag, and then taken home every half term.

If you child is unable to take part in PE then a letter must be brought into school informing the teacher of this ASAP.

If your child is taking part in an after school sports club please ensure they do not use there school PE kit and a separate kit is brought in on that day.

Introducing Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning

Many parents have expressed a wish to consider sending their child to a local grammar school. Therefore we are introducing verbal and non verbal reasoning tests as part of the curriculum.

Starting in February, the children in Y5 will complete one Verbal and one Non-Verbal Reasoning test per week, not in test conditions. Familiarisation with these tests has taken place in Bollin in previous years and it is our plan to build on that this year.

Whilst we are introducing reasoning, we will put the children into pairs to work together on the tests, with teacher and peer support when required.

Later in the year we will progress the children onto more difficult tests and they may start working alone. This will be at the judgement of the class teacher, based on the children’s confidence and ability levels.

Familiarisation with the format and technique that we teach will be extremely important. Developing these skills in children is not solely useful for grammar schools exams. Many companies use similar tests when recruiting employees and they are widely considered a worthwhile skill to cultivate. In essence, these tests assess a child's ability, as they do not rely on what your child has already learnt.

What do I do if I have a concern?

If you have any concerns about your child, please first speak to the class teacher. If the concern continues please make an appointment to speak to Miss Robinson who is the Key stage leader.
