About the Governing Body
Introduction
Welcome to the section of the website where you can find out more about the school’s local governing body, and the work that we do.
Our main role is to support the Executive Headteacher, Head of School and the staff – the phrase often used to describe this role is a 'critical friend’. We help them to set and reach targets and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life. We also work closely with the Trust Board, working together to secure the very best outcomes for the children at our school.
Our legal responsibilities include:-
- setting strategic direction, policies and objectives
- approving the school budget
- reviewing progress against the school's budget and objectives
- appointing, challenging and supporting the school senior leadership

Leaders work closely with the local governing body and trustees. The expertise of governors and trustees successfully contributes to improvements in the quality of education that pupils receive. Staff value the support that they receive from leaders and governors to manage their workload.

Local Governing Body
Our Local Governing Body meet termly and our meetings are usually held in the evening. In addition, to the full governing body meetings, we have two governor committees which also each meet termly. Much of the work of local governance is conducted through these two committees.
Education (which includes Curriculum, Standards, Staffing and Pupil Welfare)
Resources (Finance, Buildings Health and Safety)
Governors also value the opportunities they have to go into school, to meet with the Executive Headteacher, Head of School and other members of staff to help us find out how school is progressing towards its targets. These school visits are really importane and help governors experience our school 'in action' and provide valuable opportunity to meet with and talk to both staff and pupils.
Governors also attend regular training sessions to help them keep up to date with changes in education and school governance.
Types of Governor
There are different categories of governor, appointed by different groups that have an interest in the school. These are:
- Community governors (appointed by the governing body for the skills and experience they bring).
- Parents (elected by the parent community).
- Staff (elected by the school staff).
All governors have equal status, however they are appointed.
